Joseph Hwang Named Chief Operating Officer at Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals
Beverly and Gloucester, MA – Joseph (Joe) Hwang has been named Chief Operating Officer at Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals. Hwang is an experienced health care leader with a background in academic medical centers, community hospitals and large health care systems.
“As an accomplished leader with backgrounds in both administration and in direct patient care as an EMT, Joe's unique experience is an excellent addition to our team and we are so pleased to welcome him to Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals,” said Tom Sands, president of Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals.
Hwang comes to Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals from Universal Health Services (UHS), a health system with more than 400 hospitals, behavioral services facilities and ambulatory centers across the United States, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. For the past eight years, Hwang has served in a variety of leadership roles within the system.
Since March 2020, Joe has been COO at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Florida, a 295-bed facility with more than 1,600 employees serving Manatee and Sarasota counties. As COO, Joe improved the financial performance and served as a key leader during the hospital's COVID-19 response. Previously, he served as COO at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, a 120-bed facility that is a part of the Manatee Healthcare System, where he oversaw the completion of a multi-phase hospital renovation and development of new service lines.
Prior to his time in Florida, Hwang was the associate administrator at The George Washington University Hospital, an academic medical center in Washington, DC. In this role, Hwang created a new department focused on capacity management and transfer center operations, successfully improving the hospital's transfer center acceptance rate from 80 to 95 percent.
Hwang began his career in health care as an EMT prior to becoming an administrative resident at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He also served as an administrative fellow at the Lehigh Valley Health Network.

Hwang earned a Master of Health Administration from Pennsylvania State University and a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences/Biology from New York Institute of Technology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is Lean certified.
