What is a hernia?
A hernia is a condition in which part of an organ is displaced and protrudes or bulges through the wall of the cavity containing it. For example, the usual hernia is a lump of intestinal or fatty tissue that is pushed through a defect or weakness in the abdominal wall. Hernias are described based on the location of the hernia (inguinal, femoral, umbilical, and others).
Origin
Hernias can be caused by strenuous exercise such as lifting heavy objects, chronic coughing, damage from past injury or surgery, sports, pregnancy, constipation, weight gain, chronic lung disease, abdominal cavity fluid, and hereditary factors.
Symptoms
Symptoms can include a visible bulge, pain or discomfort, a feeling of weakness or pressure/fullness, as well as a burning or aching sensation in the affected area.
