Types of Anesthesia

Anesthesia comes in different forms. The type you need depends on your personal needs and your procedure. Our team can help you understand which anesthetic medications are right for you.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is used during major operations to make sure you are unconscious. You’ll likely receive general anesthesia through an intravenous (IV) or gas line. An anesthesiologist will monitor you at all times during your procedure.

Regional Anesthesia

Regional anesthesia numbs certain areas of the body where a surgeon is performing a procedure. It often involves injections that sedate you and target nerves to reduce pain.

Common examples of regional anesthesia include:

  • Epidurals, which numb your body from the waist down are performed in the OB. They also limit your ability to move your legs. Epidural medication lasts about four hours. After your procedure, your surgeon may leave a small tube (catheter) near your spine. This can help deliver pain medication to keep you comfortable while you recover.
  • Peripheral nerve blocks, which use injections of medication near a nerve or group of nerves. This can offer long-lasting pain relief with some brief loss of sensation around the injection.
  • Spinal blocks, which are like epidurals, only stronger.
