KIDNEY (NEPHROLOGY)

Overview

The kidneys are responsible for cleansing blood by removing waste and excess fluids, maintaining the balance of salt and minerals in the blood, and helping to regulate blood pressure. Physicians who specialize in the kidneys are called nephrologists.

At Beverly Hospital, our board-certified nephrologists provide comprehensive consultative, diagnostic and treatment services for individuals with a wide variety of kidney disorders. Among the complex conditions they manage and treat are:

• Diabetic nephropathy, which occurs when the coverings of nerves or blood vessels are damaged, causing them to stop transmitting messages properly
• Essential hypertension, which is high blood pressure with no apparent cause
• Secondary hypertension, which is high blood pressure caused by another medical condition
• Renal artery stenosis, which is narrowing of one or both of the blood vessels that lead to the kidneys and can cause high blood pressure
• Glomerulonephritis, a type of kidney disease in which the part of the kidneys that filter waste and fluids from the blood is damaged
• Anemia, which is when your blood is not carrying enough oxygen to the rest of your body
• Hematuria, which is blood in the urine
• Proteinuria, in which there is too much protein in the urine
• Nephrolithiasis, or kidney stones

Individuals who have chronic kidney disease and require renal replacement therapy such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or kidney transplantation also benefit from the expertise and up-to-date information our nephrologists provide.
