Beverly, MA (June 8, 2015) - Evie Hogan enjoys
reading so much that she wanted to share her passion with
others.
"I love reading and then the books take you someplace else,"
Hogan said.
So when she learned that Beverly Hospital created a lending
library to encourage mothers to read to their newborns, the
11-year-old Hamilton resident held a bake sale at Miles River
Middle School, raising $160.
"Since I love reading books, I thought it would be a good idea
to do something to help prevent illiteracy," Hogan said.
The lending library allows new mothers attending the Beverly
Hospital mother's support group to borrow children's books,
encouraging them to read to their newborns.
The library was created in honor of Patti Wallis, RN, who was a
nurse in the Beverly Hospital maternity unit for 45 years before
retiring this past fall. One of Wallis' passions during her time at
Beverly was encouraging moms to read to their babies.
"It's a good opportunity for moms to spend time with their
babies," Wallis said. "Reading stimulates babies - they look at
different things, look in different directions, hear different
sounds, and look at different colors, which help them develop eye
sight."
In total, the library has 73 books that new moms can borrow from
the library.
"I've always loved to read," Wallis said. "I love to read to my
children and my grandchildren. It's great to see other mothers
reading to their children."
