Manju Sheth, MD Named President of Indian Medical Association of New England
BEVERLY HOSPITAL AND
LYNNFIELD RESIDENT MANJU SHETH, MD, ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE INDIAN
MEDICAL ASSOCIATION OF NEW ENGLAND
Planning
Comprehensive New Health Expo for Local Indian Community in
April
December 5, 2012 (Danvers, MA) -Dr. Manju
Sheth, an internal medicine physician at Beverly Hospital at
Danvers Medical and Day Surgery Center, begins her one-year term as
President of the Indian Medical Association of New England (IMANE)
in January. Founded in 1978, IMANE is the oldest Indian Medical
organization in the United States. Its mission it to "organize and
support numerous professional and social activities for the benefit
of members and the communities they serve."
Sheth, who served on IMANE's executive committee for the past
five years, says she is looking forward to "a great year of service
ahead. Every president brings their strengths and mine is community
outreach. I plan to focus very much on enhancing service and
education for the Indian community."
IMANE regularly offers free health screenings in which members
of the organization volunteer their time and expertise to care for
patients. Annual events include a Spring CME conference in
conjunction with the Massachusetts Medical Society and providing
free health screenings at Boston's India Day event at the Hatch
Shell. Last year, the organization also collaborated with India
Circle of Caring and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
on a Tuberculosis education initiative.
When asked whether she has anything new on the agenda for 2013,
Sheth says, "One of my big goals is to develop a health expo for
the Indian community. It will be an all-day event with talks about
topics relevant to the Indian community, such as diabetes, heart
disease, women's health and osteoporosis."
No doubt that Sheth-who was named India New England's 2011 Woman
of the Year in recognition of her success and contributions to
business, cultural, social and charitable endeavors- will get the
job done. Born in India, Sheth went to medical school in Calcutta
and completed her medical training in England before coming to the
United States. A resident of Lynnfield, she balances time with her
physician husband, her 14-year old daughter and her job with her
IMANE work and her support of other charitable causes including the
Asian Task Force for Domestic Violence (ATASK) and Saheli.
Sheth is also an avid writer who formerly authored a series for
Lokvani called "Movers and Shakers in Medicine" and has
expanded her repertoire to include "the most interesting, active,
accomplished, amusing and entertaining men and women" for a story
and video interview series for India New England
Newspapers called "Chai with Manju." In addition to her Woman
of the Year recognition, Sheth was awarded the IMANE Certificate of
Excellence for Community Service in 2010, and was received India
New England Reader's Choice Best Doctor Award in 2011.
"Simply put, my goal as IMANE president is to ensure that the
local Indian community knows that we are here for them," says
Sheth.
