Tower Foundation Funds Trauma-Training Grant
for Essex County Residential Youth Programs
The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation has awarded a grant
of $183,687 to Health & Education Services (HES) to support the
agency's work with youth and their families.
The grant, payable over three years, will fund a trauma-training
program for the agency's clinicians and staff who work with youth
who have been impacted by trauma and loss. HES' youth residential
programs are in Beverly, Rowley, Ipswich and Haverhill. Thanks to
the Tower Foundation funding, staff across the residential sites
will be trained in treatment strategies which specifically target
trauma rehabilitation.
Over the next three years, representatives from two nationally
recognized organizations, the Sanctuary Model at the Andrus Center
in New York and the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in
Children in Michigan, will visit Essex County to provide training,
ongoing consultation and certification.
"Trauma and loss in children and adolescents manifests itself in
many ways and can dramatically impair quality of life and
relationships for both youth and families," says Robert Johnston,
vice president of adolescent residential services for Health and
Education Services. "This grant is a wonderful opportunity to bring
our program and clinician skills to a cutting edge level based on
contemporary brain research. With Tower Foundation's help, we will
be better equipped to assist youth who are survivors of trauma to
heal and re-claim their right to a positive future life."
