Primary Angioplasty Now Offered at Beverly Hospital
Beverly Hospital Launches Special Project to Perform Primary Angioplasty
Beverly Hospital to offer advanced treatment for cardiac patients
(Beverly, MA) - Beverly Hospital announced today a significant new treatment option for cardiac patients. Beverly Hospital is launching a special project to perform primary angioplasty and will now offer percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) - an advanced and preferred treatment for many heart attack patients, particularly for STEMI (St-segment elevation myocardial infarction) patients.
Through this special project to perform primary angioplasty, community members suffering from a heart attack or exhibiting symptoms as a result of a potential heart attack can now be transported to Beverly Hospital - saving valuable minutes and offering the most effective treatment and medical care locally in the community. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) requires EMS staff to transport any patient experiencing a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or suspected heart attack to a PCI designated special project hospital within certain mile restrictions.
"Every second counts when it comes to treating suspected heart attack patients, and we are pleased to offer this leading-edge treatment to the North Shore communities we serve," says Dr. Edward J. Loughery, Medical Director at Beverly Hospital's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. "This program combines the expertise of our medical team along with advanced technology to ensure a quick and skilled response to individuals suffering a heart attack."
The Massachusetts DPH, which has strict guidelines for hospitals to perform PCI, recently approved Beverly Hospital for the special project to perform primary angioplasty. All PCI procedures at Beverly Hospital will be performed in the Hospital's state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Suite located adjacent to the emergency room. The Cardiovascular Suite, which houses the cardiac catheterization laboratory, the interventional radiology laboratory, and a "hybrid room" which can be used for any endovascular procedures and converted into an OR, unites physicians and specialists from multiple disciplines to improve patient care and to expedite and enhance treatment options.
"Beverly Hospital is committed to investing in the programs and services that enable us to be a leader when it comes to providing top quality medical care to the North Shore," says Pauline M. Pike, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Beverly Hospital. "Our new special project to perform primary angioplasty, combined with the services already offered through our Cardiovascular Suite, is an exciting step forward in our efforts to offer a broad spectrum of advanced, integrated cardiac treatment options."
Beverly Hospital's comprehensive cardiovascular service includes a full range of cardiovascular testing and diagnostic services, treatment, prevention and lifestyle risk reduction, and rehabilitative care. It offers specialized cardiac tests such as electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, stress testing, Doppler ultrasonography and cardiac catheterization. Beverly Hospital also provides treatment for a full range of cardiac disorders, including coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, valve and artery problems, irregular heartbeat, and other medical conditions that create an increased risk of developing heart disease.
