Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals’ Cancer Data Management Program Contributes to Mass. Cancer Registry Recognition
(Beverly/Gloucester, Mass.) - The Cancer Data Management program at Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals was recently commended by the Massachusetts Cancer Registry (MCR) for its contributions toward a recent recognition received by the MCR. The MCR recently received the gold certificate from the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) for providing quality, complete and timely data. This is the tenth year in a row that the MCR has received this designation.
The Cancer Data Management program consists of a team of specially-trained tumor registrars--individuals who review hospital records to identify and compile patient data for use in cancer management programs--and volunteers who work together to pull together data regarding cancer occurrence and treatment, which is reported regularly to the MCR. This data system stores all significant elements of a patient's history and treatment, which can include information concerning demographics, medical history, diagnostic findings, primary site, histological type of cancer, stage of disease, treatment(s), recurrence, subsequent treatment and results. The completeness and accuracy of this information is crucial, as it can contribute to a variety of studies and reports aimed toward improving future cancer care.
"Through our affiliation with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, we are able to provide superior cancer care to our patients here on the North Shore," said Elisa Scher, RN, MSN, director of cancer services for Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals. "Our tumor registry program is an important facet of that care, as the data it provides will hopefully lead to new developments in cancer treatment and improve outcomes for patients in the future."
To receive the gold certificate from the NAACCR, the MCR was required to meet the gold standard in the specific certification measures evaluated. Those measures included: completeness of case ascertainment; completeness of information recorded; percent of duplicate cases and timeliness, among others.
