Lobby & Emergency Department Opened
Beverly Hospital Opens New State-of-the-Art Lobby and Emergency Department Opening Marks Culmination of $51 Million Master Facilities Plan
(Beverly, MA)--On Friday, June 15, 2007, visitors of Beverly Hospital drove along the hospital’s circular driveway to find that the area previously used as the main entrance had been replaced. On this day, Beverly Hospital opened the doors of its new, state-of-the-art main lobby to the public.
In the past month, there have been several pre-opening receptions held in anticipation of this opening. At one such reception, when the official ribbon-cutting took place, City of Beverly Mayor William F. Scanlon, Jr. joined employees and physicians along with members of the media for guided tours of the latest addition, at which time many agreed that the new lobby resembles the lobby of an upscale hotel rather than that of a hospital.
When visitors enter the doors of the new lobby they are welcomed by a Beverly Hospital greeter sitting at a large information desk to the left. On the right, is a spacious sitting area, where patients and their families may relax, search the internet using the hospital’s Wi-Fi network or just admire the towering bamboo trees whose tops are only visible from the second floor.
Friday does not only mark the opening of the new main lobby but also the new waiting area of Beverly Hospital’s modern emergency department. In order to make a seamless transition from the present emergency department to the new area, the opening of the new emergency department will happen in stages. The new waiting area will open first, followed in July by the department’s recently built 8,000 sq. ft of additional space. In the beginning of September, the new emergency department will open entirely to the public after the renovations of the present area are completed.
The new emergency department, designed to offer the best service possible to members of the community, has been expanded to include a total of 33 treatment rooms divided into specialized areas for specific types of emergency patient care, such as trauma, pediatric care, behavioral health and fast track, which is used to quickly treat patients with minor injuries or ailments reducing waiting times for all patients.
The department will be divided based both on the nature of the treatment as well as the level of severity. Both pediatric and behavioral health patients will have their own designated treatment areas, a part of the design that will help to shorten patient waiting times as well as streamline the patient registration and triage process.
Pediatric patients, whose emergency services at Beverly Hospital are supervised and staffed by Children’s Hospital Boston pediatric physicians, will be placed in rooms adjacent to one another and spacious enough for the patient, staff and families to occupy and work in comfortably.
“This designation of the different areas of the emergency department will allow the staff to provide patient-centered care as they will be able to remain in the same area, rather than moving constantly throughout the department,” said Laura Crawford, director of emergency services. With this in mind, staff work areas have also been expanded, allowing for increased visibility and access to their patients receiving treatment in the emergency department.
The opening of both areas marks a very exciting time for Beverly Hospital, as they expand to fit the needs of the community. This new addition will bring patients and their families access to high-quality care in a facility that is functional, modern and comfortable.
