Northeast Health System Names Recipient of Annual Dr. Philip D. Herrick Award
Beverly Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston Neonatologist Recognized for Commitment to Excellence
(Beverly, MA) - At its Annual Meeting on January 9th, Northeast Health System (NHS), parent company of Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals, awarded its third Annual Board of Trustees’ Dr. Philip D. Herrick Award, which honors physician excellence and community commitment, to Tai H. Tran, M.D. Dr. Tran is a member of the Beverly Hospital medical staff who truly embodies many of the professional and personal traits for which Dr. Herrick has been admired for so many years. The purpose of this award is to recognize a member of the active medical staff who displays those characteristics.
A member of the Beverly Hospital medical staff since 1990, Dr. Tran is director of neonatology at Beverly Hospital and a Children’s Hospital Boston physician. He is board certified in Pediatrics with a subspecialty in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Dr. Tran earned his medical degree from Saigon Medical School in Saigon, Vietnam. He completed a residency at Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans, LA., and completed a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine there as well. Dr. Tran is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He was previously an Assistant Professor for the Departments of Pediatrics at both St. Louis University and Tufts University.
“Dr. Tran typifies everything that is good about physicians,” says Henry Ramini, M.D., Chairman of the Board for Northeast Health System. “He possesses both a professional and moral obligation to enhance the ability of Northeast Health System to provide the best patient care possible--every single day.”
After he received his medical training, Dr. Tran joined the faculty of St. Louis University Hospital for four years, where he was medical director of the Level II nursery (for newborn infants requiring special treatment for complications) and set up two newborn nurseries. In 1990, Dr. Tran was recruited by the Newborn Division of Boston’s Floating Hospital for Children to set up a Level II nursery at Beverly Hospital. After the completion and accreditation of the nursery, Dr. Tran settled permanently at Beverly Hospital as Medical Director of the first special care nursery on the North Shore. Subsequently, Dr. Tran joined the Newborn Division of Children’s Hospital Boston in 1997. Dr. Tran was integral in the development of a new $4.7 million Special Care Nursery, which opened at Beverly Hospital in the fall of 2004. This new nursery brought Beverly Hospital to a new summit of expertise and affirmed Beverly as the dominant facility on the North Shore for maternity and newborn care.
The Committee determined that the recipient of the award should possess certain qualities, which made them stand out among the physician community. Those qualities or criteria are as follows: a practicing physician, recognition of outstanding achievements, professional accomplishments, community service, loyalty and dedication to NHS and an inspiration to the general medical staff.
